While we had a lovely stay in Borth in March 2024, we did have to navigate the dreaded lurgy! On the second day of our trip, I came down with a cold, followed a couple of days later by Liam. Although we weren’t at death’s door by any means, we did have to rejig our plans a bit to allow us the time to recover.

Borth Beach

We’d finished our previous walk at our accommodation in Borth. At this point, the Wales Coast Path and the Ceredigion Coast Path deviate, with the Wales Coast Path taking a right to begin the long trek around the River Dyfi, and the Ceredigion Coast Path continuing along the coast a couple of miles to Ynyslas, ending with stunning views across the river to Aberdyfi.

I had originally planned for us to walk from Borth to Machynlleth on this day, and to take the short walk from Borth to Ynyslas separately, however, not quite feeling up to the 15-mile walk to Machynlleth, I realised that we could take a shorter and much flatter route which would allow us to tick both Ynyslas, and a few more miles of the Wales Coast Path, off the list.

Views of Snowdonia from Borth Bog

After enjoying a lie-in and a nice brunch, we began our walk, starting by continuing along the Wales Coast Path from Borth. The path heads inland, across Dyfi National Nature Reserve at Cors Fochno (‘Borth Bog’). This peat bog is the only UNESCO biosphere reserve in Wales. The path was muddy at times, but thanks to some handily placed sleepers, we were able to navigate our way through this section without too much trouble.

Walking near Tre’r-ddol

After passing a couple of fields with horses in, we reached the village of Taliesin, with a short stretch of walking along an A-road taking us to the bus stop at Tre’r-ddol, from which we would begin our next walk.

Views of Aberdyfi

Having successfully navigated around four-and-a-half miles of the Wales Coast Path, we turned off the path and walked along the B-road towards Ynyslas. While this wasn’t the most exciting walking, it was flat and easy, and we were able to enjoy some nice views of Aberdyfi across the river.

Aberdyfi from Ynyslas

We soon reached Ynyslas, which is also part of Dyfi National Nature Reserve, from which we were treated to stunning views across the water to the place we would reach after walking nearly 20 miles further!

The Forest of Borth at Borth Beach

After stopping for some lunch, the tide was still low enough that we were able to finish our walk along Ynyslas and Borth Beach, passing the Forest of Borth – the mostly submerged remains of a 4,500-year-old forest which can be seen peeking through the sand, which was only revealed in 2014, following heavy storms.

Sunset on Borth Beach

We reached our accommodation as the sun was beginning to set, and enjoyed the most beautiful sunset view of Borth Beach from our balcony. Although this was an 11-mile walk, it was almost entirely flat, so we made really good time – and, we managed to salvage a decent day out despite our stuffy noses!

🥾 Distance: 11 miles.

⭐ Highlight: The views of Aberydi from Ynyslas and beautiful Borth Beach.

👎 Less Good: The bog section was, unsurprisingly, a bit muddy!

🚗 Transport: This was a circular walk, which we began and finished at our accommodation.

🛏️ Accommodation: We stayed in a gorgeous apartment in Borth, which had the most stunning sea views.

🌱 Food: We had dinner back at our apartment.

🗺️ Map: This route is featured in the official Snowdonia and Ceredigion Coast guide.
