Spot the Pembrokeshire Puffins on a Boat Trip from Martin’s Haven

If you’re visiting Pembrokeshire in the spring or summer, you won’t want to miss a trip to Skomer Island to meet the puffins. Skomer is home to over one million seabirds, including over 40,000 horned puffins. Pint-sized puffins are a real treat to spot in the wild – they’re adorable, great fun to watch, and only stop off in Pembrokeshire between April and August.

During these months, you can go puffin spotting on a day trip to Skomer, where you’ll land on the island for a few hours of on-foot exploration, or a boat cruise, where you’ll enjoy views of Skomer, Skokholm and Grassholm and the wildlife that surrounds the islands.

Day Trips to Skomer

Day trips to Skomer are available to book with Pembrokeshire Islands Boat Trips, from £24 per person (correct as of April 2025). A 15-minute boat trip will take you to the island and you will have four-and-a-half hours to wander around the island before returning to Martin’s Haven.

This is a truly unforgettable adventure – I still have memories of a trip to Skomer Island when I was around six years old, nearly 30 years later!

Boat Trips from Martin's Haven

We had hoped to take a day trip to Skomer during our Wales Coast Path adventure, but unfortunately, the trip was cancelled due to poor weather. This is the one downside of a day trip – although both landing trips and cruises are often cancelled, day trips to Skomer book up well in advance, so if you’re unlucky with the weather, you can’t just reschedule.

Nevertheless, if you have the opportunity to book ahead for your visit to Pembrokeshire, it’s well worth a go!

Boat Trips around Skomer

Although we weren’t lucky enough to land on Skomer during our time walking the Wales Coast Path in Pembrokeshire, we did enjoy a fantastic boat trip. We enjoyed a one-hour Skomer Cruise in June 2023, where we spotted puffins, guillemots, razorbills and more!

The Skomer Cruise is available to book with Pembrokeshire Islands Boat Trips, from £18 per person (correct as of April 2025), or you can opt for the Seabird Spectacular – a one-and-a-half-hour sunset cruise – from £28 per person (correct as of April 2025).

Whichever you choose, you'll have a memorable trip!

A walk along the Wales Coast Path is an amazing adventure, so what are you waiting for?! If you’re ready to start planning your walk, you can find lots of resources to help you on your way here.
